Aiken deputy put on leave after resident killed

A Montmorenci woman is dead after a shooting Monday morning involving Aiken County sheriff’s deputies.

Capt. Eric Abdullah said deputies were dispatched to a mobile home at 2479 Andrews Circle at 10:19 a.m. in reference to a person threatening suicide.

After Deborah McCollum, 52, confronted officers at the front door of her home with her gun, one of the deputies fired a shot fatally wounding her, according to authorities.

McCollum was pronounced dead at the scene, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

Deputy Christopher Salley, who was involved in the shooting, has been placed on administrative leave while South Carolina Law Enforcement investigates, Abdullah said.

SLED took control of the investigation in accordance with protocol for all officer-involved shootings.

Sheriff’s investigators and SLED agents collected evidence Monday afternoon from the trailer off of Old Barnwell Road.
