Man, 21, killed in Peach Orchard Road crash

A 21-year-old Waynesboro man was killed in a fatal accident in Richmond County on Saturday, and the driver of the wrecked vehicle has been arrested, police said.

Akash N. Patel was pronounced dead at the scene about 2:10 p.m., Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said.

A Chevrolet pickup, driven by 19-year-old Matthew Chance of Jenkins County, overturned while trying to change lanes in the 4400 block of Peach Orchard Road, authorities said. Patel, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected.

Chance is charged with vehicular homicide in the second degree and traveling too fast for conditions. He was taken to a hospital to be checked before being taken to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

An autopsy will be performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta.
