The driver in last week’s fatal crane truck accident that killed a Grovetown man was arrested Tuesday, officials said.
John William Boland, 64, of Lincolnton, has been charged with failure to stop at a stop sign, driving too fast for conditions and homicide by vehicle, according to Richmond County jail records.
Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said Boland was the driver of a crane truck that overturned May 14, killing passenger Eryc Jordan Riddle, 28, of Grovetown.
About 7:40 a.m., the Erycson Crane truck rolled after attempting to turn left on New Savannah Road from Skyview Drive, according to a police statement. The cause of the accident was initially attributed to mechanical failure.
Riddle, who was wearing a seat belt, was pinned under the vehicle after it overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Boose at 8:05 a.m.
An autopsy was performed last week at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta. Results show that Riddle died from positional asphyxiation, Boose said.
