Augusta police seek church donation box thief

Police are searching for a man who has been taking cash from the donation boxes at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.

Deputies were called to the Monte Sano Avenue church about 1 p.m. Monday where they learned a man had emptied money from the boxes twice since May 9.

An employee at the church, who is in charge of emptying the boxes daily, told police that the man kicked the boxes, mounted on brick columns in the lobby, to gain access to the cash, according to an incident report.

The boxes, which are labeled “Poor Box” and “Catholic Social Service,” allow members to donate money to the causes.

The employee told police he believes the man has taken money from the boxes on several occasions.

The man, who was caught on camera, is described as white, 45-50 years old, with glasses and slightly balding.
