Man beaten, robbed by group

An Augusta man was beaten and robbed by six unknown men near the T.W. Josey High School football stadium Thursday night, police say.

About 8 p.m., Martece Birckhead, 25, was leaving work when he was confronted by six black males on Essie McIntyre Boulevard, according to a Richmond County sheriff’s report.

According to the report, one of the men asked Birckhead for money. When Birckhead said he didn’t have any, another man brandished a handgun and demanded money.

The other five men began to kick and punch Birckhead until he fell to the ground. They took $45 from his wallet before fleeing toward Olive Road.

Deputies searched the area but were unable to find anybody that matched the description that the victim gave.
