Police suspect Toyota Corolla struck teens in fatal accident

Police think a 1990s-model Toyota Corolla might have been one of three cars that left the scene Saturday night after a fatal accident on Gordon Highway.

One teenager was killed and another seriously injured about 11:40 p.m. as they tried to cross the eastbound lanes of the 1400 block of the busy highway between Old Savannah Road and Doug Barnard Parkway.

The Corolla is believed to have struck both teenagers before leaving the scene. A witness told police Zykeith Harris, 14, was struck again by two more vehicles that also drove away. Zykeith was pronounced dead at the scene. The other teen was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center with serious injuries, deputies said.

Police believe one of the vehicles is a 1993 to 1997 model Toyota Corolla. The vehicle would have front and driver side damage and would be missing a headlight lens, driver’s side view mirror and a Toyota emblem from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle also might have gold trim around its base. The sheriff’s office is working to identify the other two vehicles involved in the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 821-1483 or 821-1080.
