Man, 50, arrested after attempting to drive through Augusta National gates

A 50-year-old man was arrested Saturday after police say he attempted to enter Augusta National Golf Club in his vehicle.

About 8:40 p.m., Joseph John Murphy tried to enter the course via one of its gates, Sgt. Glen Rahn said. Murphy was advised that he was not permitted to enter the property and promptly left.

About 10 minutes later, Murphy returned in his vehicle and bypassed the security guard. He was stopped shortly thereafter by Richmond County deputies.

He was arrested on a charge of criminal trespass, Rahn said. Murphy is not a local resident.

Augusta National Golf Club sustained no property damage in the incident.
