2 arrested after 2 failed robbery attempts

Two men were arrested Sunday after two failed robbery attempts within 30 minutes of each other, police say.

Robert Earnest Cave III, 44, of Martinez, and Christopher Oexner, 27, of Hephzibah, have each been charged with two counts of felony attempted robbery by intimidation, according to Richmond County jail records. Cave has also been charged with misdemeanor DUI in an unrelated incident.

About 11:40 p.m. Saturday, Richmond County sheriff’s deputies were called to the Burger King at 3431 Wrightsboro Road about an attempted robbery, according to an incident report.

Deputies spoke with an employee, Shandra Starks, who told police that two male customers had ordered food at the drive through speaker before pulling up to the window and demanding money.

Starks said one of the suspects warned her, “Don’t make me pull it out,” but never displayed a firearm. When Starks denied repeated requests to hand over money, one suspect grabbed at the window and attempted to climb through.

Starks ran toward the back of the restaurant for her safety and the men left the scene empty-handed.

About midnight, deputies were called to the Circle K gas station at 261 Furys Ferry Road, according to an incident report.

Ashley Gautreaux told police that she was inside the store when a white man entered the building asking to use the bathroom. The man returned a few minutes later and asked to buy six packs of cigarettes.

When Gautreaux turned to put the cigarettes on the counter, he placed an envelope on the counter and demanded money.

Gautreaux refused and locked herself in the women’s restroom while she called 911. The suspect then left the store on foot, but not before he was captured on surveillance cameras.
