One man is dead and another is wounded after a drug-related shooting at the Southgate Shopping Center on Gordon Highway late Saturday, police said.
About 10:20 p.m., an off-duty Richmond County sheriff’s deputy working a special assignment heard shots being fired near the Bi-Lo grocery store in the shopping center, Sgt. Glen Rahn said.
The deputy pursued a vehicle occupied by three males to the 2100 block of Cook Road. There, police arrested the suspects and learned one was suffering from a gunshot wound.
The wounded suspect is receiving treatment.
Deputies responding to the shopping center found a white male dead in the parking lot. Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose pronounced dead at the scene Michael Hanson, 35, of Augusta at 11:05 p.m. Saturday.
Boose said he was shot at least one time and that an autopsy will take place at the GBI crime lab in Atlanta.
“I’ve never seen so many cop cars in one spot,” said witness Suzanne Lopez, of Augusta. “They were coming from every direction."
Kenya Page, of Augusta, was inside Bi-Lo at the time of the shooting. She said she heard about five or six shots before walking out of the store to find a man laying next to a red Ford pickup.
“I knew immediately that it sounded like a gun,” Page said. “I was afraid to step outside at first, but then I saw the officer chase a red car out of the parking lot. We saw (the police) swarming the parking lot in a few seconds.”
Another witness, Bradley Jennings, of Augusta, said he saw the victim attempt to enter the truck before falling to the ground.
