Man charged in shooting at Augusta home

One man has been charged in a shooting at an Augusta home late Friday while another has charges pending against him, authorities say.

Carl Benton Collins Jr., 22, of Augusta, has been charged with felony possession of a firearm by a first time offender for his role in the shooting, according to Richmond County jail records.

Another man, Shawn Bernard Doby, 21, of Augusta, has charges pending against him, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office incident report. Doby, who was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to his right side, had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

About 10:25 p.m., Richmond County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 2800 block of Thomas Lane in reference to shots fired.

Deputies found Doby on the pavement in front of Collins’ home suffering from a gunshot wound. After searching Doby, police found a 9mm pistol in his jacket pocket.

Collins’ girlfriend, LaEisha Hayes, 19, told police that Doby had knocked on her door after her boyfriend left Friday evening, telling her that Collins’ vehicle had broken down.

After noticing Doby’s gun, Hayes said she called Collins, who returned home and found Doby peeping into his bedroom window with his pistol in hand.

Collins’ pointed his .380-caliber pistol at Doby and told him to drop his gun. When Doby turned around with his gun still in hand, Collins shot him, according to the report.
