Police say a Beech Island man tried to rob a Graniteville woman at gunpoint Saturday inside her home, which later became a fire scene.
James Earl Sheppard was taken into custody by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office late Saturday. He will be charged pending the results of an investigation, Capt. Eric Abdullah said.
The woman, who lives in the 400 block of Connector Road, told deputies that she came home to find a man in all black with a gun demanding she hand over money and her car keys.
The woman managed to escape and call 911, Abdullah said. When deputies arrived, they found the woman in the street and the house on fire.
The sheriff’s office set up a perimeter and shut down part of Connector Road while crews put out the blaze. Shortly thereafter, Abdullah said, police received a call about a suspicious white male on Midland Drive.
Deputies made contact with Sheppard on Midland Drive and gathered sufficient evidence to link him to the home invasion, Abdullah said. It is unclear whether Sheppard started the fire.
