Augusta teen pleads to sex crime against child

A teen accused of engaging a 5-year-old in a sex act pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of sexual battery Monday in Richmond County Superior Court.

Assistant District Attorney Melissa Marks said she was in agreement with the defense that Quincy L. Mims, 19, needed mental health treatment more than a lengthy prison term. Mims was indicted on a charge of aggravated child molestation, punishable by 25 years in prison to life, for the April 29 incident.

Judge J. David Roper accepted the plea to a reduced charge and sentenced Mims to the maximum possible: five years in prison, under the First Offender Act.
