Wagener toddler's death ruled a homicide

A death of a Wagener toddler Sunday morning has been ruled a homicide by child abuse.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said the 2-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, appears to have incurred a significant brain injury. A Monday autopsy confirmed the child died as a result of blunt force trauma.

The child died at Georgia Regents Medical Center.

The child’s stepfather, Leon Marquis Davis, 34, of Wagener, was charged with homicide by child abuse Monday, according to an Aiken County sheriff’s news release.

Deputies were called to 337 Camp Rawls Road around 9 a.m. Friday after receiving a 911 call from Davis and found the child unresponsive. The boy was taken to the hospital, where doctors found injuries consistent with abuse.

Davis was taken into custody initially for three outstanding family court bench warrants. The homicide charge will be added.
