Glenn Hills Middle student arrested in campus gun incident

A 15-year-old Glenn Hills Middle School student was arrested Thursday and charged with armed robbery and the possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime after bringing a gun to campus after an altercation the day before.

Richmond County School Safety and Security Chief Alfonzo Williams said authorities are also searching for a T.W. Josey High School student regarding the incident.

Williams said the Josey student, whose name he did not release, walked into Glenn Hills Middle on Wednesday and attempted to rob a student of his cell phone in a bathroom.

During the altercation, another student reported seeing the Josey student with a gun. However Williams said the incident was not reported until later in the day, and a gun was never found. On Thursday, a parent notified the school that her daughter told her a boy had given her a gun to hold that morning.

Williams said officers identified the 15-year-old as the student who brought the unloaded .25 caliber semiautomatic handgun to campus and that he was connected to the assault by the Josey student Wednesday.

“It appears as though the two students conspired to rob this student and to take his cell phone,” Williams said. “It stems from an incident that occurred off of school campus, and they continued it onto school property.”

The victim received minor lacerations to his head, Williams said.

While officers continued to investigate and search for the Josey student, a basketball game scheduled for tonight at Glenn Hills was cancelled.

Deputy Superintendent Tim Spivey said all students will go through hand wand detectors before entering school doors Friday.
