Ex-Richmond County chairman charged with shoplifting

Former Richmond County Commissioner Paul William “Bill” Hiers told police a long Christmas Eve checkout line led him to shoplift from a Columbia County store.

According to a Columbia County sheriff’s incident report, Hiers, 68, was at CVS, 3527 Old Petersburg Road on Tuesday afternoon when employees witnessed him putting CoverGirl make-up and a bottle of Aleve in his pants pockets before leaving the store without paying.

Police said Hiers claimed he didn’t want to stand in the long line so he decided not to pay. A woman, who was with him and had handed him the items in the store, told police she was not aware he intended to steal the items.

Hiers was charged with shoplifting and released from the detention center later that day.

Hiers served on the former Richmond County Commission from 1979 to 1982 and was its chairman in 1980.
