Jaidyn Williams, 8, dies of injuries after being hit by van

A fourth-grader hospitalized for more than two weeks after being hit by a minivan while trying to board a school bus died Thursday evening.

Richmond County deputy coroner Mark Bowen said 8-year-old Jaidyn Williams died around 6 p.m. at Georgia Regents Medical Center.

Jaidyn, a pupil at Sue Reynolds Elementary School, was boarding a bus in the 3800 Block of Belair Road on the morning of Dec. 9 when he was struck by a minivan driven by Scott William Hancock, 20, of Augusta.

The bus arms, stop sign and flashing lights were working at the time of the accident, but conditions were foggy, according to police and witnesses.

Hancock is being held in the Richmond County jail on charges of serious injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving and failure to stop for a school bus while loading and unloading.
