Shooting suspect arrested

Police have arrested Bobby Earl Haynes, 54. He is charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He is also facing robbery by force charges in connection with a separate incident.

Police have arrested a man who fired a shot at a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy Saturday evening.

Bobby Earl Haynes, 54, has been charged with felony counts of armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and aggravated assault on a police officer, Lt. Lewis Blanchard said.

About 6:50 p.m. Saturday, Haynes brandished a firearm and demanded money from the clerk at AutoZone at 2946 Deans Bridge Road, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. A nearby deputy confronted him, and Haynes fired a shot in the deputy’s direction before fleeing toward Wheeless Road. The deputy returned fire and was not injured.

Haynes has also been charged with felony robbery by force in a separate incident.

Police say that in the Dec. 9 robbery of Family Dollar at 2914 Deans Bridge Road, Haynes threw two registers on the floor and grabbed the money before fleeing the scene.
