Police charge Ga. man with killing teen girlfriend, child

JEFFERSON, Ga. -- A 34-year-old man is facing murder and feticide charges in connection with last week’s deaths of his teenage girlfriend and her unborn child.

Authorities believe the couple recently moved from south of Atlanta to Jackson County near Athens, where the mother and child were fatally injured Wednesday night.

At about 9:45 p.m. that day, someone placed a 911 call from the home. Sixteen-year-old Cheyanne Nicole Hair was subsequently transported to Athens Regional Medical Center, where she later died.

Within hours of the teen’s death, her boyfriend was arrested for allegedly violating probation in Spalding County, authorities said.

An autopsy performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s State Crime Lab determined that Hair had been murdered and was also pregnant.

The boyfriend, 34-year-old Jonathan Michael Smith, was charged with murder and feticide Friday.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation consulted with the Piedmont Judicial Circuit’s district attorney regarding Smith’s charges. The GBI said in a news release that authorities anticipate additional charges may be brought against Smith in connection with the alleged murder-feticide.

Authorities have not publicly stated how Hair and her unborn child were killed, citing an ongoing investigation.

Smith is being held at the Jackson County Jail. The county’s chief magistrate judge held a first appearance for Smith over the weekend, in which he denied bail.
