Pilot killed in Edgefield plane crash

A man was killed when a small airplane crashed Monday night in Edgefield County, authorities said.

Edgefield County Emergency Management Director Mike Casey said the man, whose name was withheld pending notifying the next of kin, was the only person aboard the plane, which crashed on Rachel Avenue near Twin Lakes Airport near Trenton, S.C.

The plane, a twin-engine Piper Aztec, left no debris field, Casey said, which could indicate it flew directly into a wooded area near the landing strip, rather than hitting the ground and sliding in.

Several houses line the air strip, but none were damaged, Casey said.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were notified of the accident Monday night and were on their way to the scene.

“It’s inconclusive now as to what caused the crash,” Casey said. “A few people in the area say they heard the engines sputter out, but we won’t know until the NTSB and FAA complete their work.”

Casey said he doesn’t think weather was a factor and that the lights on the landing strip were functioning when emergency crews arrived.
