An assistant pastor of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church has been placed on administrative leave for stealing about $1,700 in tuition payments from the church’s office, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah says.
The Rev. Avery Hanna, a native of the Bahamas, admitted to the thefts, according to a statement from the diocese. The thefts happened over several weeks, the diocese said.
According to the statement, Hanna has been removed from St. Mary on the Hill and will reside at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah pending the outcome of his criminal case and a ruling on his immigration status.
