Man charged in sledgehammer pharmacy break-in

A 26-year-old Martinez man has been charged with breakinginto a pharmacy with a sledgehammer in an attempt to steal pills and leading officers on a chase, police said.

According to an incident report, Richmond County sheriff’s deputies were called to CVS, 3231 Wrightsboro Road, just before midnight Monday for a burglary in progress. Witnesses told police they saw someone with a sledgehammer breaking into the store.

Police arrived in time to see a vehicle leaving the parking lot. Officers chased it to the 2600 block of Walton Way, where the driver, identified as Bryant Tredwell Williams, lost control of the vehicle while making a turn and hit several trees.

Police said Williams admitted to breaking into the store in an attempt to steal Klonopin prescription pills, but a metal security gate in the pharmacy prevented him from getting the medicine.

Officers found a sledgehammer, black clothing, gloves and a ski mask in Williams’ vehicle, they said.

Williams, of Old Petersburg Road in Martinez, was charged with second-degree burglary, fleeing and attempting to elude and reckless driving.
