"Person of interest" surrenders in hit-and-run fatalities

Derrick Larenzo Thompkins

Police say a person of interest in a hit-and-run that killed two pedestrians Saturday morning turned himself in Tuesday.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday released a photo of Derrick Larenzo Thompkins, 25, of Brynmawr Drive, as someone they wanted to question in the hit-and-run that killed Jerry Mims, 58, and Tonya Lane, 54, both of Augusta.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, charges against Thompkins are pending.

Deputies were called Saturday to the 2200 block of White Road, where they discovered the bodies lying in the road.

Authorities on Monday offered a reward for information into the incident. Soon after, police issued an alert for a possible suspect vehicle, which has been described as a gold or tan Pontiac G6 rental car.

Police said the reward was still being offered, and the traffic division was still investigating the accident.

Anyone with information can contact the sheriff’s office at (706) 821-1080 or (706) 821-1483.
