Man threatens to kill 2-year-old son in standoff

Police arrested Antonio Riley, 24, after he threatened to kill his 2-year-old son during an armed standoff.

Police arrested a man they say threatened to kill his 2-year-old son during an armed standoff Tuesday.

Antonio Riley, 24, of St. George, S.C., has been charged with simple battery, terroristic threats and acts, false imprisonment, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a statement from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

About 2 p.m. Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to an apartment on Thornberry Drive, where the mother of the child, Shakoria Edwards, 24, told police she had an argument with Riley. Riley pushed Edwards as she attempted to leave the apartment, and once outside, she said she heard a sound similar to a gun chambering a round, according to the statement.

Deputies say that Riley told them if anyone entered the apartment, he would kill the child. Riley’s mother talked him into surrendering, and minutes later he opened the door and was arrested without incident.

The 2-year-old was found unharmed inside the apartment. Police later found a .40-caliber handgun in a laundry basket, the statement said.

Sandra Wiggins, who lives a few doors down from the incident location, said she was watching television with her 7-year-old grandchild when deputies came to her window and told her to stay inside.

“I kept asking, ‘Should I be afraid?’” she said. “I don’t know them at all, but all you have to say is, ‘Gun!’ and I’m scared.”

Wiggins said this is the first such incident she has seen since moving in with her daughter.
