Shirley Elaine Bush Mack

Authorities say a Keysville, Ga., woman is dead after her niece stabbed her several times Monday evening.

About 8:30 p.m., Burke County sheriff’s deputies went to a home in the 1100 block of Scott Store Road, where they found Shirley Elaine Bush Mack, 49, on the floor with stab wounds to her chest area, Sgt. Dedric Smith said. Mack was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have arrested Mack’s 14-year-old niece, whose name is being withheld, on charges of murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. She was taken to Burke Medical Center to be treated for cuts on her hand before she was sent to the youth detention center in Sandersville.

Smith said he believes Mack was arguing with her niece before the child stabbed her about three times. The sheriff’s office has collected evidence but is awaiting test results to determine what was used to kill Mack.

Police said four other children who were at the residence were handed over to the Department of Family and Children Services.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Web site, Mack was a registered sex offender and was convicted of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 16 on June 20, 1990, in Florida.
