Fleeing driver tosses out marijuana during chase

A man is in jail after he threw marijuana out of his vehicle while leading Augusta authorities on a chase down several roads, police said.

Richmond County narcotics investigators spotted a man in a silver GMC Yukon driving without his seat belt about 2 p.m. Monday. The investigators tried to stop the vehicle at the Mercedes-Benz dealership on Washington Road.

Police said the driver, George Rodney Reid, 33, of Evans, drove twice around the dealership and went through Westside High School’s parking lot before leading deputies down Washington Road, Furys Ferry Road, River Watch Parkway, Claussen Road and Stevens Creek Road.

Throughout the chase, police saw the driver tossing bags of drugs from the windows of the vehicle, they said.

The chase ended on Stevens Creek Road where police said they caught Reid and discovered marijuana in the vehicle. The sheriff’s office K-9 unit was called in to find marijuana scattered along the highway.

Reid has been charged with fleeing and attempting to elude, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, no insurance, wrong side of road, no passing zone, reckless driving and too fast for conditions.
