Augusta couple plead guilty to robberies

A couple who said they turned to crime after an eviction notice followed birth of their fourth child pleaded guilty to robbery charges Wednesday.

Leon A. Player, 39, pleaded guilty in Richmond County Superior Court to three counts of armed robbery. His wife, Imani H. Player, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts robbery.

The two were arrested after an April 2 holdup at Green City Auto Center. Leon Player was also accused of committing armed robberies at two Augusta hotels on March 29 and April 2.

Leon Player, whose prior criminal convictions include a robbery in New York, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years’ probation.

Imani Player was sentenced to one year in the county jail, with credit for time served, and nine years’ probation. Judge Sheryl B. Jolly sentenced her under the First Offender Act.
