Police release video of break-in

Richmond County investigators have released video of a man stealing a shopping basket filled with cigarettes from a Family Dollar on Milledgeville Road.

According to a police report, the alarm was activated at the store on 2310 Milledgeville Road about 5 a.m. Sunday.

Surveillance video showed a man in a black hat prying the lock on the front door. He walked away and returned about four times before opening the door with a tire iron.

Police said the burglar went directly to the cigarette case, which had been left open, and loaded up a shopping basket. He left behind the tire iron, a metal pipe and a piece of cloth.

A store representative told police it’s unusual for the cigarette case to be left open. He said that in six weeks of opening the store, it had never been left unlocked.

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (706) 821-1020 or 821-1080.
