Ex-deputy pleads not guilty in evidence-tampering case

 

A former Richmond Coun­ty sheriff’s deputy pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of tampering with evidence and violating his oath of office.

Wade Smith, 34, of North Augusta, was indicted July 30 on the charges that led to his firing June 4 after 11 years with the sheriff’s office. His case is assigned to Superior Court Judge Carl C. Brown Jr.

Smith is accused of improperly handling evidence – marijuana, cash and a weapon – confiscated during a Nov. 2 call for a possible domestic violence incident on Dent Drive.
