Witness says shooting suspect escaped on bike

A witness to the shooting that hospitalized an Augusta man Saturday said the shooter escaped on a bicycle.

Sharon Ivey, 29, of Augusta, told Richmond County sheriff’s deputies that she and Julion Tyrone Hamilton, 39, of East Chapman Street, were walking down Sibley Street when a man known as “Newt” rode up on a bicycle and shot Hamilton, an incident report said.

When found injured by deputies Saturday, Hamilton would only say that he was shot in the leg. Deputies found a bullet hole above his right knee, and paramedics found a second gunshot wound to the stomach, the report said. Ivey told police she heard only one gunshot.

One 9 mm shell casing was recovered from the scene.

Police have identified “Newt” as Jamel Olajuwon Boyd, 17, of East Bullah Street, who is being called a person of interest.

Anyone with information on Boyd’s whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (706) 821-1080 or the Criminal Investigation Division at (706) 821-1020.
