A man was arrested Wednesday night in the shooting of his girlfriend during an argument at a south Augusta apartment that afternoon, police said.

James Clifton Tate, 31, was arrested in Villa Rica, Ga., by the Georgia State Patrol. He was taken to the Richmond County jail.

The victim, Bertha Lopez, 35, was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center shortly after 5 p.m., according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
