Police seize drugs, firearms at Dearing farm

Local law enforcement offices joined forces in a drug bust at a Dearing, Ga., farm Friday.

The sheriff’s offices from McDuffie and Richmond counties, the Regional K-9 Task Force, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI executed a search warrant at Whitaker Dairy Farm on Georgia Highway 221 around noon, according to a statement from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators seized a half-pound of methamphetamines, firearms and a marijuana plant on the 550-acre farm. A small explosive device was also recovered and detonated by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad.

Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Allan Rollins said the investigation has been going on for more than a month. He said the drugs were imported and have a street value of about $50,000.

The FBI is enlisting the help of Spanish-speaking translators to conduct interviews with those who were taken into custody.

Police said the Whitaker family, which owns the farm, was not involved in the drug operation.
