Woman accused of using stun gun in Cracker Barrel denied bond

Iyana Nicole Herbert, 23, of Augusta, is accused of attacking the adoptive family of her son with a stun gun and tire iron.

A judge denied bond Tuesday to an Augusta woman accused of attacking the adoptive family of her son with a stun gun and tire iron last month.

Columbia County Magistrate Judge Jason Troiano said at the preliminary hearing that Iyana Nicole Herbert, 23, of Windsor Spring Road, was a danger to the community. He also ruled there was enough evidence to proceed in Superior Court with prosecution on a charge of aggravated assault.

Authorities said that on the morning of June 27, Lisa Harrison was awarded full custody of Herbert’s 2-year-old son at a hearing at the Evans courthouse. Herbert followed Harrison and her family to Cracker Barrel at 522 N. Belair Road and rammed their car with her SUV, they said.

Herbert, armed with a crowbar and the stun gun, confronted Harrison and others inside the restaurant and fired the weapon, authorities said.

“There were people running, jumping over tables trying to get out,” Columbia County sheriff’s Deputy Robert Blandenburg said at the hearing.

The family, along with other patrons in the restaurant, fled out the back emergency exit, but Herbert followed. Blandenburg was the first deputy to respond and found Herbert outside trying to use the stun gun. Someone had already taken the tire iron away.

“She was definitely going to town trying to zap those people,” Blandenburg said at the hearing.

At least one person was stunned inside the restaurant. Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins and his wife witnessed the incident. Collins helped the deputy restrain the woman until she could be handcuffed.

Blandenburg had to put Herbert on the ground to calm and detain her. Someone else struck her while he held her against a wall.

“I saw a hand come out of nowhere and slap her across the face,” Blandenburg said. “I think they were very angry about what was going on.”

Herbert has been held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond since her arrest.
