A 60-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with a late-night shooting in Jefferson County on Friday.
Olegario Rodrigez was charged Sunday with one count of murder, one count of aggravated assault and two counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime, Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. Robert Chalker said. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
About 9 p.m. Friday, deputies were dispatched to the 1400 block of Fred McDonald Road near Wrens, where they found the body of Juan Antonio Rodriguez Garcia, 36, with a gunshot wound to his head. Police also found Gustavo Hernandez Diaz, 23, suffering from gunshot wounds. Diaz was airlifted to Georgia Regents Medical Center, Chalker said.
Rodriguez was arrested an hour later at a nearby house.
Investigators say the shooting might have stemmed from an argument at a July 14 soccer game between Diaz and Rodriguez’s son.
An autopsy was performed on Garcia at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta on Saturday.
The GBI and Spanish-speaking deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office are assisting Jefferson County investigators with the case.
