Three wrecks involving eight vehicles kept both lanes of westbound Interstate 20 near the state line shut down for more than an hour Thursday afternoon.
Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Ramone Lamkin said two wrecks happened simultaneously about 2 p.m. after two semitrucks traveling west on I-20 tried to steer away from two vehicles parked on the side of the interstate. One of the vehicles had broken down and another car had stopped to assist the motorist, Lamkin said.
Three people were hurt in the wrecks, but none of the injuries were life-threatening, Lamkin said.
Another wreck involving two vehicles happened on the eastbound side of I-20, where motorists were looking at the other crashes, Lamkin said.
Traffic took about an hour-and-a-half to clear and was detoured off Exit 5 in South Carolina, he said.
