North Augusta carjacking, assault reported

North Augusta police are investigating a Tuesday morning carjacking and assault.

According to a news release, public safety officers responded to the AutoZone in Breckinridge Plaza about 9:20 a.m.

They found John Hartley, 49, of Elgin, S.C., who said he was in the parking lot of the business when a man approached and asked for a cigarette.

Hartley said the man then hit him in the head and attempted to cut him with a sharp object, possibly a knife. The man then drove off in Hartley’s black 2006 Suzuki Forenza. Hartley was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers for treatment for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The incident is under investigation by North Augusta Department of Public Safety.
