Augusta mother accused of leaving children alone overnight

An Augusta mother was arrested Friday morning after police said she left her five children alone overnight under the care of a 10-year-old.

According to a news release, Sherry L. Brown was taken into custody at her home on F Court near Lake Olmstead and will be charged with five counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to police, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was notified Friday that a 10-year-old at T. Harry Garrett Elementary School told officials she had been left unattended with four siblings.

Investigators believe Brown, 28, left home about 10 p.m. Thursday, leaving the 10-year-old to look after her siblings, ages 8, 6, 5 and 4.

The 10-year-old went to school Friday, leaving the 8-year-old to watch the three younger children. Brown was arrested when she returned.

The state Department of Family and Children Services was notified, as were relatives of the children.
