Murder trial under way this week for Augusta man

Scott McCord testified Tuesday that neither he nor his friend knew anyone in an Augusta housing public housing complex off Olive Road, but they were familiar with the area and thought they could find some cocaine there.

Buchanan Marshall, 29, waited in his truck as McCord talked to some people they spotted on Cooney Circle in the early morning hours of Oct. 9, 2011. Only one person spoke to him, but there wasn’t any cocaine.

Days later McCord picked out that man in a photo lineup as the person he talked to and saw just before Marshall was shot to death while sitting in his truck. That man was Chad Walker, 22, McCord testified Tuesday in the second day of Walker’s trial in Richmond County Superior Court. Walker has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and weapon violations.

Another witness who testified against Walker is his former co-defendant in the case, Mikell L. Thomas, who pleaded guilty last week to a charge of armed robbery. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Thomas testified at his sentencing hearing that he gave the gun to Walker who used it to hit Marshall in the head and shoot him in a robbery attempt.
