Georgia high court affirms Richmond County murder conviction

An Augusta man convicted of murder in a 2007 nightclub shooting was fairly tried and convicted, according to a Georgia Supreme Court decision announced Monday.

The court denied the appeal filed on behalf of Denzel Laquan Ward, who was 16 when he was arrested on murder and weapon charges in the July 1, 2007, killing of Nicholas Carpenter, 24.

According to testimony at Ward’s Richmond County Superior Court trial two years later, Ward and two friends had been kicked out of Club Platinum, 1505 North Leg Road, for fighting. As he was driving off, Ward fired a .45-caliber handgun, killing Carpenter.
