Cab company reports fake driver after sexual assault

A cab company says someone is posing as one of its drivers after a Grovetown woman reported a sexual assault early Saturday.

The woman, 24, said she had been at a downtown Augusta bar until almost 3 a.m. when she asked a bar employee to call her a cab. She said a Checker Cab arrived. She told the driver her address, then passed out in the back seat, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The woman said she woke to a loud bang and the driver was standing by her open car door. The driver put his hands under her dress and moved them up her inner thighs. He made a sexually suggestive remark and she shoved him off her, according to the report. The driver got back in the vehicle and took the woman home.

The woman said she called Checker Cab of Augusta to report the incident. The dispatcher told the woman that an impostor is driving around in a Checker Cab vehicle, picking up women and trying to commit sex acts with them, according to the report.

Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said there have been no other similar reports.
