Assistant district attorney reports handgun theft

Deputies were called Monday to the John H. Ruffin Jr. Courthouse to investigate the theft of a handgun from an assistant district attorney’s vehicle, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office report.

Assistant District Attorney John T. O’Neal told police the 9 mm Hi-Point pistol was taken from his unlocked 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe between Dec. 10 and Friday morning. O’Neal told police he had borrowed the gun from his friend, Geoffrey Fogus, who also is an assistant district attorney.

Police advised Fogus to locate the weapon’s serial number at his home and report it to the sheriff’s office.
