An Augusta man who turned 18 last week was killed and another person was sent to the hospital after a shooting following a robbery attempt Friday evening outside Dogwood Terrace apartments.
Richmond County Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose identified the victim as Trezmaine Jessie Williams. He was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m. in the 2000 block of First Avenue.
Dontavius Payne, also 18, was in critical condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to Richmond County Sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser, who said the sheriff’s office took one person into custody.
Police received the call around 6:30 p.m. to the 2000 block of Second Avenue. When they arrived, they discovered Payne with several gunshot wounds lying in the fire lane. Payne was sent to Medical College of Georgia Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, Dresser said.
Dresser said it appeared Williams ran from the scene, collapsed and died on First Avenue.
An autopsy will be performed today in Atlanta, Boose said.
Investigators said Payne and Williams attempted to rob Marcus Gainey, 30, who was able to find a weapon and shoot the two teenagers in what Dresser said was self-defense.
Both Payne and Williams had active felony warrants for armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in an unrelated case, Dresser said.
Lakisha Moore said she and her three children would be moving out of the neighborhood after Friday’s shooting.
“It’s too much,” she said. “I got young kids. They don’t need to be around this mess.”
Jamie White, also from Second Avenue, said he and his friends had heard the shots. He said he originally thought it was fireworks or kids playing basketball, but when deputies arrived, he realized what had happened.
“It’s so sad,” White said. “Why do people have to shoot each other like this?”
