Convicted child molester pleads guilty to public indecency

A convicted child molester arrested earlier this year after he was caught performing a sex act on a city bus pleaded guilty Thursday.

Alerted by a female passenger, sheriff’s deputies arrested Renfred J. Roberts, 31, on May 18 for public indecency. After finding several small bags of marijuana during a pat-down search, the officer also charged Roberts with possession with intent to distribute. Roberts pleaded guilty in Richmond County Superior Court to both charges.

Judge J. Wade Padgett accepted a plea negotiation and sentenced Roberts to five years in prison – a term that he will serve simultaneously with a five-year sentence imposed last month for violating probation.

In 2002, Roberts pleaded guilty but mentally ill to child molestation and public indecency. He was sentenced to five years in prison followed by 10 years’ probation. Since his 2006 release from prison, Roberts has been convicted twice for violation of the Georgia sex offender registry.
