Mother who left toddlers home alone sentenced to probation

An Augusta mother whose 2-year-old was saved by a neighbor who spotted the toddler dangling from a second story window pleaded guilty to child cruelty charges.

The prosecution recommended probation for Loreal Goggins, 26, because of several mitigating circumstances, District Attorney Ashley Wright said.

In Richmond County Superior Court on Monday, Judge Michael N. Annis sentenced Goggins to three years probation under the First Offender Act.

Goggins left her 2-year-old twins alone in their Bradywine apartment off Boy Scout Road when she went to donate plasma. Goggins had no prior history with the Department of Family and Children Services, Wright said. Since the Aug. 10 incident, she has taken a mandatory DFCS parenting class and a second parenting class that wasn’t required, Wright said. Goggins’ father has custody of the twins but she is working toward getting her parenting rights restored.
