Reward offered in attempted mugging at Fourth and Greene streets

Augusta Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest of a man who tried to mug a woman at knifepoint Friday afternoon.

About 3 p.m., a woman was in her car at Fourth and Greene streets in Old Towne when a black man wearing black clothing demanded her purse at knifepoint, then ran away.

It was the second attempted mugging at the same intersection within several days. On Wednesday, a 70-year-old Trenton, S.C., woman told authorities a man pulled a knife and demanded her purse in the same spot.

According to a Richmond County sheriff’s incident report, the woman was sitting in her vehicle about 3:45 p.m. when a black man dressed in green and brown camouflage walked up to her driver’s side window with a knife and demanded her purse.

The woman told deputies she froze at the request and the man ran away.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 821-1080 or Crime Stoppers at (706) 722-1010.
