Bond hearing delayed for University Hospital slaying suspect

Charles William Gorrell, 85

A bond hearing was continued Friday morning for the man accused of shooting his nephew last week on the seventh floor of University Hospital.

Charles Gorrell, of Aiken County, was scheduled for bond consideration on charges including murder in connection with the Oct. 16 death of Tim Grooms.

No reason was immediately given for the continuance Friday.

Investigators say Gorrell, 85, shot Grooms twice in the chest over a longstanding family dispute.

At his first appearance, Gorrell asked Magistrate Judge Stephen Shepherd for bond so that he could help his wife home after her treatment for pneumonia at the hospital. Shepherd said his court could not grant bond on felony charges.
