A Waynesboro, Ga., teenager surrendered to Burke County authorities Sunday after a nightclub shooting left a man dead.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had been searching for Brandon Rashad Mickens, 19, in the slaying of 24-year-old Rockregas Sursson.
Police were called to Club 358 off Bates Road just before 2 a.m. Sunday and found Sursson with a gunshot wound. He was transported to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he died from the wound, according to Burke County Coroner Lee Webster Jr. He said there would be an autopsy Monday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Augusta.
Mickens, of Highway 80 East in Waynesboro, was found in Richmond County after he called his father. His father called an off-duty Burke County deputy, who picked up Mickens and took him to jail, Sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Lowe said.
Mickens was being held at Burke County Jail on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Lowe said.
Mickens has been arrested before, including Sept. 16 on charges of possession of alcoholic beverages by a minor, open container and disorderly conduct.
Lowe said he was told by security at Club 358 that the business was holding a private birthday party when the shooting happened. The club has been shut down at least once before, after another shooting in 2010, but Lowe was not sure if it had the same owners in both instances.
“We are going to see what we can do to keep (Club 358) shut down,” he said.
