Hassan Coles, 34, was arrested after police said he stabbed his wife with their children present.

An Augusta man was in jail Friday after he stabbed his wife in front of their children, police said.

According to a police report, Hassan Coles, 34, was visiting Quanisha Coles, 30, from whom he had separated, at a residence on Warren Road around 11 p.m. Thursday. He grabbed a knife during an argument and stabbed her in the shoulder, police said.

Two others in the home tried to tackle Coles and retrieve the knife, causing him to stab an air mattress where his two children, ages 2 and 3, were sleeping, the report said.

Four other children were present.

Police said Coles grabbed several knives before running away.

He was later found on the Aiken-Augusta Highway after he tried to jump onto a moving bread truck and hit the side mirror, police stated.

Hassan and Quanisha Coles were admitted to a hospital for treatment. He was released to the jail; she was treated and released.

“Her injury was very superficial,” Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser said.

Hassan Coles is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, cruelty to children in the second degree and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.
