Man accused of aiming car at deputy caught

A man accused of trying to run over an Aiken County deputy Wednesday is in custody.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. marshals’ Fugitive Task Force, apprehended Eddie James Brockington on Friday night in Richmond County.

According to a news release, he is being held at the Richmond County Detention Center pending extradition to Aiken County.

On Wednesday, a deputy working near the school zone at Belvedere Clearwater Road saw a black Saturn with South Carolina plates speed through the area about 7:30 a.m.

The deputy tried to stop the car, but it continued onto Belvedere Ridge.

Police said the fleeing driver tried to run over the deputy, who had gotten out of his cruiser. The deputy fired a shot at the vehicle before returning to his car to continue pursuit.

The Saturn later stopped and both occupants fled. Deputies were able to catch the passenger, whose name was not released. He was not charged.

Belvedere Elementary was on lockdown for about two hours while deputies searched the area for Brockington.

Police searched the vehicle and found marijuana and a handgun on the driver’s side floorboard, Aiken County sheriff’s Capt. Troy Elwell said.
