Two arrested in metal stripping of air conditioner units

Two people have been charged with causing $60,000 in damage to air conditioning units at the Augusta-Richmond County Recreation and Parks Department.

According to a news release, authorities were called to McDuffie Woods Community Center, 3431 Old McDuffie Road, on Jan. 17 after employees discovered that 13 industrial size units had been stripped of copper tubing and aluminum radiator coils.

Quartrail Walker, 28, of Louisville, Ga., and Jason Brigham Jr., 19, of Girard, Ga., were arrested Thursday while attempting to sell the stolen metal to Campbell’s Recycling Center, authorities said.

The recycling center is a member of the CSRA Metal Theft Task Force, a group of police agencies and recycling centers that joined forces to crack down on metal thefts.

Walker and Brigham were booked into the Richmond County Jail on 13 counts of second-degree criminal damage to property.
