Aiken police searching for early morning drive-by shooter

Police are still searching for leads in an early Monday fatal drive-by shooting in Aiken.

Aiken Public Safety officers were called to the 400 block of Abbeville Avenue NE about 1:30 a.m., Lt. David Turno said.

When officers arrived they found the body of Rickie Lorenzo Harden, 44, in bed with a gunshot wound to the head. The autopsy revealed death by gunshot, and was ruled a homicide by Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Turno said Harden’s wife was home at the time and woke up when she heard the shots to find her husband bleeding in bed. She was not injured.

Investigators found several shell casings around the home, Turno said. It was clear to officers the Hardens’ home had been targeted, but they have yet to find a motive.

The gunshots were spattered vertically, which Turno said indicates the shooter was traveling in a vehicle.

“It appears the suspect wasn’t standing there shooting,” he said.

Aiken has seen drive-by shootings in the past, although they are rare.

Turno said they have little else to go on and are asking the public for information.
